Steamed Kueh Lapis

Photobucket

I had BIG PLANS today. But it turned out not what I expected. I had planned to make the 9-Layer Lapis in the morning, bake a Chocolate Cake in the morning, fetch the girls in mid-day, bring a lunch box for my eldest and come home to do frosting for Ah Boy's birthday cake.

So, in the morning, after dropping off both girls to school, I started with the lapis and the chocolate cake, at the same time. The lapis took me a little longer than expected because I had decided to use my bread Loaf pan instead of the round pan I used the other day. The stainless steel is a thicker material and I also had to use another wok for steaming them. Instead of my usual 6 minutes, the middle layers took as long as about 10 minutes to steam. And whilst doing that, I was creaming the butter for the cake.

By late morning, the lapis was done and I decided to use the agar cutter to cut it. It turned out lovely. I have two other metal cutter similar but the plastic one that I bought just last week seemed to have a nicer and more distintive curve. And using this Loaf pan, I only need to cut according to thickness as the length of each slice is perfect. I made full use of my cutting mat that had measurements printed. How convenient!

Well, as I was editing the pictures and admiring the lovely colours, Voila, I realised something about my Lapis Kueh.. Did you notice anything different about it?

Instead of the usual 9 layer that it is supposed to have, I have actually made them into a 12 layer Kueh Lapis!! Wooo Hooo...

Like what I'm doing? I have the recipe here.

So what happened to the cake I'm supposed to dress up in the afternoon? I didn't have the time to decorate it as I wanted. Why? Because my kitchen sink was stuck! What can I say, not one sink but both sinks. So I spent time trying to dislodge it. I tried hot water and even vinegar. Soda Bicarbonat and I even used those metal rope for dislodging stucked water pipes. After about 2 hours on it, the water finally drained off. And I remind my helper for the millionth time to sieve out leftover foods before washing them. Do you have a kitchen tip for me in case it get stuck again?

By that time I had lost the interest in decorating my cake. And I did such a whizz with it. Girls argued that Ah Boy would want Pink, Purple, Green, Yellow Orange...bla bla bla.. Whatever, I just did a very simple cake that turned out too feminine for Ah Boy... hehehe It looked like a girls' singlet. wahahahahaaha I'll try better next time! *wink*

Hi Fad mom, wow! This one of my favorite cakes. I love to peel the layers and eat slowly, ha ha.
Anymore left? Goes well with coffee.
Have fun, and 12 better than 7 anytime. Lee.
