Leong Kee (Klang) Bak Kut Teh

In Malaysia, Klang has always been the place for their popular Bak Kut Teh. Compared with Singaporean version, many Malaysian or Klang styled Bak Kut Teh is dark in colour and tastes of chinese herbs. In Singapore, we have both types though the Peppery and light coloured ones are just as popular among Singaporeans.

As a true blue food lover Penangite, eating herby and dark coloured ones have always been my main preference. But staying in Singapore, the Bak Kut Teh in Singapore is not too bad if you try some of the good ones and different styles. Among the favourite ones are the the East Coast Lagoon Food Village and Founder's Bak Kut Teh at Balestier Road.

I only learnt to appreciate light coloured and peppery type ever since I tried Founders' Bak Kut Teh.

It was indeed an eye opener for me. The soup, though looked bland and watered down, actually taste very good. And since then, I don't turn down the Singaporean Pepper Bak Kut Teh anymore but look for those that may be as flavourful as Founders'.

Last week, Hubby and I decided to try out the Leong Kee Klang-Bak Kut Teh that is located at Beach Road. We had the impression that as long as it was Klang Bak Kut Teh, the worst of the lot would still taste a lot better than any ordinary ones. And because we have heard from some friends that this place was also popular, we went there expecting a nice meal.

Guess what was the verdict? If you give me 5 stars to vote, with 1 star the worst and 5 the best, I really can't help but only give it only 2 stars. Why do people think this Bak Kut Teh is good? The mixed claypot with ribs, livers, pork parts tasted bland.

There was no whiff of herbs even as it landed on the table. It has body but it lacked taste.

The only herb preference was the bitterish taste but then in Penang herby soup, at least you can still smell the chinese herbs as they serve. The only justice this place did was the Pork Trotters they served was tender enough. But it was not tasty.

Gosh, it is such a disappointment, really. We have patronized many Bak Kut Teh stalls and this one doesn't taste good that even any ordinary stalls from the neighbourhood market serves better bak kut teh anytime. If this is considered well known, it must be because either it is inconsistent in it's quality or some had not really tasted a good Klang Bak Kut Teh worth the mention Klang. Such a shame. Please take the 'Klang' word out.
